In June we had an infestation of tiny ugly
crawly bugs that showed up every morning in one of our bathtubs. I would wipe
them up only to find them again the next morning. After a few days they also
began to appear on the bathroom floor and when they spread to the laundry room
I nearly lost my mind. I called a professional. That was weeks ago.
This morning when Alex the
exterminator (looking a lot like Bill Murray from Ghostbusters) came to
the door I could not find a single bug to show him. They had disappeared.
We walked through the whole house until we
found some other bugs - a centipede consuming a dead beetle. This was
good enough for Alex. He went ahead and mixed up a batch of poison and did his
thing. Alex explained that he knew why the bugs were missing. They have been
consumed. It is the story of The Old Lady Who Swallowed the Fly.
My little crawly bugs followed some pipe or duct into my house, releasing
pheromones as they came (more than likely for romantic purposes). Some
slightly larger insect, such as the dead beetle, came in as well and followed
the pheromone trail all the way to the dinner table – the bug feast. So much
for romance!
But now there is something else following
the beetle and his brothers and sisters, and they are getting devoured as well.
And we can only imagine who is coming after the something else.
Happily Alex is playing the role of the Old Lady so
this story does have a happy ending - at least for me.
The bottom line is that there are no more
tiny crawly ugly bugs in my bathroom. As long as we don't end up with a cow
coming down the pheromone trail - I will be a happy home owner. And we probably
won't because – once again – we are empty nesters!
